Santa Monica Mountains 30K
Congratulations go to Wendy! She ran the Santa Monica Mountains 30K trail race yesterday, with a great finishing time of 3 hrs 37 mins. She was hoping to break 4 hours, and did it in style. There were 3 significant climbs in the race. The end of the race called for about a 2+ or so miles of generous and well deserved downhill. Wendy began picking off the other runners and I estimate we passed at least 8 to 10 in this time (several of them men, actually most of them men). She finished incredibly strong and we woulda caught two additional female runners if we woulda had about another quarter mile.
Rincon 20 club gets 3 new members
The Rincon 20 miler is one of the more difficult GRR training runs. The elevation net gain is at least 5000 feet and the GPS comes in at 6226 feet. The first 10 miles is a difficult uphill with a 1 mile down hill break at around mile 5. The last few miles of the down hill is in open sun and usually hot.
See http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/7151995.
Congratulations to Wendy, Linda and Mike for joining the Rincon 20 club. Other members are Ken, Leon, Xander, Eric and Paul. Thanks to Leon and Paul for driving us back and providing some extra water and energy drinks.

Cancer Challenge 5K
Bert came in 1st in his AG at the Cancer Challenge 5K in Westwood with a time of 20:40. Go Bert!
Iron Mountain Adventure Run
Xander, Eric and Ken ran, climbed, slid and hiked to the top of Iron Mountain. The 14 mile trail is deceptively difficult and should be done in cool weather with lots of water. It was a little like doing Garcia Trail about 7 times with steeper slopes, loose rock, and cactus in hot weather. More photos are posted in the photo section.
Long Beach Marathon
Senior Olympics
Bert got the gold in the 800 meters and silver in the 1500 at the Senior Olympics at UNLV. He will be going to the nationals in August. Good going Bert!

Mike Runs Garcia
Kudos to Mike for completing the Saturday long run up Garcia and down GMR for the first time. He also added 2 extra miles past Colby for a 15 mile run. That puts him well within the range of a 1/2 marathon and within reach of training for a marathon.
Congratulations to Leon!
Leon came back with a 2nd place finish in his age group at the US National Championships Long Course Duathlon in Auburn, CA. Read about his 5 1/2 hour adventure and triumph in the Glendora Ridge Runner News.

Chantry Flats to West Fork Run
Eric and Ken completed their exploratory run to see if Chantry Flats to West Fork would make a good Saturday long run or training run for marathons. This course is fantastic with water running and visible for most of the course. It is around 20-21 miles long. 7 miles up hill and 13 miles down hill.
We started the run at 6 am and it was cloudy with light fog. Ken's GPS watch was acting up so we could not map the course. This created a little anxiety, since we are sensitive to how many miles we run into the canyon in case we get lost and want to turn back.
The first 5 miles up the canyon was fairly easy. The uphills are mild with easy stretches and a wonderful stream with waterfalls all the way up. After 5 miles, we started our ascent up to Newcombs Pass at around mile 6. This mile is more difficult and reminded of Garcia in some spots.
When we reached Newcombs, the cloud cover was below us like a thick white blanket with deep blue skys overhead. The most beautiful picture of the year and I didn't bring my camera.
At mile 7 we got lost for about 10 minutes. The trail down to Cogswell has the marker 2N25. The down hill is fast and long down to Cogswell.
Special thanks to Fe and Porchdog for meeting us at Cogswell and giving us rides back from West Fork.
